Bush’s Speech

Bush’s speech was a transparent public-relations offensive, offering nothing new unless you count the grudging admission that the training of the Iraqi troops hadn’t gone quite as well as hoped. Bush, in an effort to show resolve, is scheduled to deliver three more speeches in the lead up to the Iraq election on Dec. 15 in an effort to show resolve. But speeches don’t matter much; it’s the events on the ground in Iraq that sway public opinion. And that’s not likely to be helped by today’s news of 10 Marine deaths in a roadside bombing outside Fallujah--one of the deadliest attacks against U.S. troops in months.
